I became interested in...

Why and when did you become a producer?

I became interested in making my own music at around age 15, when i started my sorta industrial electro side project from back when i was almost only into heavy music and played drums in various bands. at 17 i discovered Flying Lotus, and he made me fall in love with lush melodies and sound textures, so that’s when i shifted my whole career into making smooth grooves and dreamy rhythms instead of violent noise, and i’m so happy to have found this path.

Does your abstract photography influence or intertwine with your music? Would you consider yourself a photographer or artist as well? Have you ever had a photo show?

I don’t consider myself much of a photographer, i just like to dabble in the visual arts sometimes, i’m far from a professional, but i do enjoy taking and creating minimal dreamy visuals. and again, my sounds and my visuals are all part of that same smooth and calm approach to art i’ve been taking.

Explain your musical inspirations and your “sound” . Do you enjoy making specific genre? What is an appropriate listening environment for your listeners? Or ideal.

As it stands, i can probably tell you that my idols are still Peter Gabriel and Flying Lotus, so i try to merge as much influences from both artists into my music as possible, but i think Flylo has the upper hand since i dont have a band to play my stuff yet and i’m not that prog. but i really try to bring a proggy feel to my beats, and incorporate world music instruments and classic Peter Gabriel synths. i dont make a specific genre, its more of a specific mood, i dont like aggressive maximalist music like the modern dance pop artists on the radio right now so i more or less try to be the opposite of that. As for where to listen to my music, i’d say everywhere is a good place because good music can change what you think of stuff like where you are.

Discuss your decision to release with ELLT and your cassette. List any comments (positive or negative) about your experience with us. Will you be returning to ELLT with future releases?

ELLT is fantastic. What a top-notch experience i’ve been having so far, i wouldn’t be where i’m at without the help of grandma! I would certainly release with ELLT in the future!

How does your location in Canada influence your craft? Does it?

I dont really think it influences my craft, though i really wonder how different my music would be if i grew up in LA instead of some small rural town in Canada.

List any goals for yourself, upcoming shows and directions you’d like to take.

I’m currently working on a pop album with a friend who’s gonna sing and add some guitar. i’m not sure what the project will be called for now, and i also got a couple collab albums on the way, one with a rapper too. i think about half of all that is coming out in 2013.

“The Visions of Don Quixote” was inspired by a dream...

“The Visions of Don Quixote” was inspired by a dream I had about Don Quixote as a beat maker; a man trapped in his own delusions. I woke up and made all the beats for this album in a 12 hr period. I didn’t eat, sleep or anything. I just grabbed my MPD and Sp-404 and made my soundscapes.

I began as a DJ when I was 14 yrs old. Started as a turn tablist. I was given Ableton 6 and started messing around with production here and there. I took it seriously in my senior year of high school when I got an MPC500 but I broke that.

I put out my 1st beat tape in 2011 with my homie Wrex Mason titled “m#xed feelings” when I got signed to Grappa Frisbee Records. I put out a slew of digital releases in 2012. ELLT004 is the 1st physical since GFR001. I really hope to perform across the country with this release. I’ve done shows in Philly, Shanghai, China & Atlanta, Ga. I also hope to perform in more festivals this year and hopefully ELLT can help with that.

I really appreciate ELLT for being a family. Greg, Kevin , Kj, and the rest of the family are all super dope. I decided that ELLT would be a good home for me to do a physical release. I plan on putting out a follow-up digital release in July called, ” Rappity Raps,” featuring vocals from sbCNCS, plewto smith, Jibra’il abdul-azeem, evan darko, chakkra tara, and myself.

I would love to work with Jeremiah Jae and the rest of the brainfeeder collective. I love collaborating with all of my homies on ELLT and My Illlyterati and Air haze family because we just don’t make wack records.

Kj: What is your relationship with each other? How long have you know each other , history, funny stories you can tell us etc.

Andres:

We have an odd relationship. We have known each other for many years, since like middle school, but we were never really friends.. well like hang out after school friends. We were like hi & bye friends, acquantinces per say.

Our real relationship started & took off once I developed an interest to rap. I always knew Aaron (Flamingosis) was an amazing producer & a local monarch when it came to beat making. So when I started putting stuff out there he was one of the first few people I hit up & showed my work to.

Immediately we began working together. There is something about working with Aaron that I don’t feel with anyone else, a very strong musical connection. I enjoy working with him.. Mainly because I feel as though we have the same mentality when it comes to “real” music & because he truly believes in my talent & I believe in his.

We are an odd but entertaining dynamic duo.

There are many funny stories to share between us.. Most are inappropriate & drug related so Ill leave those out hahaha.

Aaron:
Yeah we weren’t that tight back in middle school and high school. The music is the main reason that brought us both together at this point in time because our interests are so similar now. We work very well together as musicians and a strong friendship has grown between us because of our passion for music.

Funny story: I got too high at Andres’s apartment one time and his posters in his room were beginning to look at me funny, so I got scared and ran home.

Kj: Gotta watch out for those posters. Haha. What is Dres Cas musical history and his interest in ELLT ?

Andres:
Well I have been rapping for almost two years now. Don’t have much of a history or any glorious moments but I have performed a couple of times & also won a showcase a couple of months back. I have 2 solo mixtapes out “Monogamy Intervention” & “The R.A.P.E Tape” which were both different from each other but definitely displayed the direction I want to push my music & my persona. I also have a third solo tape coming out soon called “DeadCrow Da Necro” which is on some lyrical, “Fuck the world” type rap. I think my music is generally abstract, lyrical, dark, & witty but at the same time real.. I think it’s more for the underground scene & for people who truly love rap & lyrics. My interest in ELLT grew once Aaron told me he was releasing his beat tape, “REWORKS”, through you guys & grew even more once we saw the feedback & attention it was getting. We are very confident in this album & are hoping that through ELLT we can help push it & get our names out there to some new listeners & lovers of this art form.

Aaron: Andres is incredibly talented and he’s one of the most underrated rappers that I know. He has only been rapping for a few years, but he has grown more as an artist in a few years than most people grow in a lifetime. I convinced him to drop Crow Diamonds with me on ELLT so that he could receive more recognition and be heard by a wider audience.

Kj: List Inspiration, motivation and story behind this album. Any setbacks or breakthroughs that you may have encountered.

Andres:
Where to begin.. I recently became a US citizen so I thought with this tape I could display the emotions & hardships immigrants & those not of high class go through on a day to day basis. Hence why the first track off the album is called “Being Spic”. Depression played a huge part in the thought process behind this album because it inspired the lyrics & motivated me even more to tell you my story. A young illegal alien growing up in America. The whole album is bits & pieces of my life & my way of coping with the odd situations I face daily. Another thing that inspired me is seeing Aarons success with his music, I knew I had to bring the heat to match up his beatufiul sounds. Ive had a minor set back with my music over the past couple of months due to me having a life now hahaha. Before having a green card all I did was sit at home, smoke weed & rap all day & night.. Now I have a job which takes up most of my time but I’m learning how to manage my time so I can write & record music. I’m just really happy to finally put out an all original album & that it is with none other than my Crow compadre FLAMINGOSIS!!!

FA BLACKCROWS DA TAKEOVAAA!

Kj: Hahahahaaha. I’m down with that.

Aaron: Andres pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one. We always wanted to make a full length release together, so we’re both excited that this is finally happening. I guess that you can call that a breakthrough. He wants to share his thought provoking life experience with other listeners and I want to share my mellow-feeling beats with others through this album.

Kj: Favorite producers/rappers you are watching in the beat scene? Role models?

Andres:
FLAMINGOSIS!!!! Flying Lotus, RJD2, JonWayne, Tyler The Creator, Chuck Strangers… This is a question better suited for Aaron. However, Im into old school producers like J Dilla, Madlib, MF DOOM, DJ Premier (Even though hes still killing it)… Artists like that. But as far as my rap role models go I have a top 5 most people wouldn’t agree with haha, but it goes like this… MF DOOM, Cage, Eminem, CopyWrite, & Mos Def (in no particular order… except for DOOM.. He’s the reincarnation of God).

Aaron: Knxwledge, Mndsgn, Hud Mo, Jay Dee, Madlib, Fly Lo, Samiyam, Dres Cas, Daedelus, Tokimonsta, Herbie Hancock, Taylor Mcferrin, Bobby Mcferrin, Mr. Dibiase, Devonwho, Shlohmo and a shit ton of over people that I can’t name off the top of my head at the moment.

Kj: Do you have a favorite track off the album?

Andres: It’s a tie between “Being Spic” & “Facing Off”. They both have huge emotional ties to me.

Aaron: I love all of them.

Kj: Any upcoming shows or tours?

Aaron:
I’ve been holding back on performing because last time I was scheduled to perform I was taken off the list last minute because it was at a bar & I was 20 at the time. It got me really pissed off because the promoter didn’t inform me ahead of time & I made a 45 minute trip with a 40+ following to only be let down.

FUCK YOU PRADOS & DOLCE LOUNGE! But now that I’m 21 & confident in the music I’m putting out I think it’s time to start promoting myself more & performing.

Aaron: Right now I’m playing at this summer music fest called “Kittenfest” on June 28-30 in Hopatcong NJ. Hopefully I can add some other shows on the list and start a mini summer tour or something like that.

Kj: What can we expect from Dres Cas and Flamingosis in the months to come?

Andres:
More projects together for sure.. Soul mixed with rebellion. We are a duo called the “FA BlackCrows”, which is where the title “Crow Diamonds” comes from. This is our first release & it certainly will not be our last! STAY TUNED!

Aaron: You can expect us going to Cluck-U Chicken to get some wet bites and I guess you can say we’ll be making more music.

Kj: Thanks guys for choosing Ellt and for sitting down for an interview. You can find the guys at their links below. Happy listening and thanks for reading.

Marcus Kuzvinzwa, popularly known as Languid among the music...

::

Marcus Kuzvinzwa, popularly known as Languid among the music community, has released his album, Pheels, this past February. The combination of eclectic drum patterns and mystifying melodies conveys a unique sound that is sure to enrapture all who listen. In the following interview, Languid’s chill vibes will charm you, as he describes the outcome of his recent release, where he draws his inspiration from, and dedicated appetite for sushi. Read as the delightful Kitty Luxxx asks him some delightful questions.

KL : When did you first know you wanted to be a producer?

LG: Well, it would have to be the first time that I watched Samurai Champloo and heard of Nujabes, Fat Jon and Tsutchie. From then on I was pretty much hooked on Nujabes’ music and I wanted to know how to put so much energy and emotion into songs (which I’m still working on). I had Flying Lotus as my first experience of beats back in primary school, but I couldn’t really understand the patterns until I realized they’re offbeat. Then, beats became super awesome sauce to me.

KL: How would you describe your own sound?

LG: I’ve never really known an exact way to describe my sound since it can vary song to song at times. In general it’s off-kilter, melodic (in strange ways that it shouldn’t be sometimes) and intricate when it comes to drum patterns. I like building a song and using trial and error to see what works and what doesn’t work. Particularly with sampling, I enjoy finding really off-the-wall loops that sound weird but work really well.

A recent example would be, “Yuu Dew (ReelLuv)” from my Pheels tape. The sample in that has some pretty complex rhythms with the drum pattern. With my electrical stuff, admittedly it takes me longer to create since I’m not great at finding the sound I want. When I do, everything is gravy and I enjoy either remixing or ad-libbing songs I’ve never particularly liked and making them more…languid. All in all I think my sound reflects me as a person.

KL:What goals do you wish to accomplish via your music career?

LG: I want to develop my sound to a level I aspire it to be. Hopefully when I start building on my melody composition skills and arrangement, I’ll be able to find the exact sound I want in that field of production. Not to say that I’m not happy with the abilities I have now, I’m more than grateful, especially for the cats on Soundcloud; that helped me out in the early days before I started making beats.

Expanding on the way I perform live is another major aspect I need to improve on.

KL:What outside sources inspire you to create? What musicians/producers inspire you?

LG: Clouds, clouds, clouds. They are pretty much the coolest natural things in my opinion. I love chilling and watching them pass by, even more when I’m making beats. They give me a sense of calm I can’t get anywhere else, nah mean?

Food is another; my “EarFood” is pretty much an ode to how much I love the stuff. Miles Davis got me into jazz. Some people even say I look like a 22 year old Miles Davis. I’ll let you decide that.

One of things on my bucket list is to visit Japan. I love, love, love the land of the rising sun. The

culture is awesome and influences my sound greatly. Nujabes, is the main reason I want to visit. The news of his passing hit me really hard to the point that I stopped listening to his music because I felt too emotional. When I saw that Spiritual State was released, I tried my best to not listen to it until I had the physical copy, so I gave in; the album was as I expected, incredible.

KL: What does music mean to you? How has it impacted your life?

LG: Music is a major part of my life. I can’t go a day without listening to some. For me it has loads of different uses, be it to chill, exercise, or do the nasty with Melody (my midi keyboard). Of course I don’t just listen to one kind of genre, otherwise I’d be a pretty lame music listener. When I’m in a bad mood for example, I love to listen to really chill stuff like Quadron, George Duke etc.

Every kind of music has its purpose and message, and it’s the way different people interpret it that makes it special in my view.

KL: How has the reaction to your latest release been?

LG: It’s been quite good actually. I wasn’t expecting that many people to like Pheels from the day of the release. Of course I marketed it a little, but I’m really happy that the tape is being enjoyed. People were saying they were ‘Pheeling’ it, ha. Either it really chilled them out or got them into a groovy vibe. Plus, a lot of peeps liked the picture, which I got from a certain Japanese video that I shan’t disclose, but the image was perfect for the album. I did add it to the video for ‘No Greater Love’ though…

KL:How long did it take you to make the album from start to finish?

LG:Well, I’d say about a month or a little bit less, mainly because I haven’t really had much time to be making beats until recently. I always start working on a song, leave it for a day or two, then complete it when I go back to it. Otherwise, I end up loosing my sense of quality when it’s the only thing I’ve been listening to all day. It’s funny because I wasn’t even going to do this tape if it wasn’t for the fact all the songs had some kind of relation to feelings. Hence the album title, Pheels. When I finished the tape I actually had 20 tracks and I had to take off two which were, “(Ob)Session” and “Sayonara,” which I’ll release at some later point.

KL:Where does the album title, “Pheels” come from?

LG: Basically it’s feeling, but selling it as Pheels looked a lot cooler. I do like spelling things like that most of the time because I find it humorous, but it also gives the songs a different impression.

KL: What’s a typical production day in the life of Languid like?

LG: Overeating sushi, yaki soba, flapjacks, cookies, and washing it down some kind of healthy juice. Most of the time it’s just me in my room listening to samples then sitting down and having a “chop sesh.” It takes me a while to find a loop that I like, then when I do I’ll probably listen to it for a good couple hours and then expand on the idea while referencing to the first loop. As soon I finish the loops on to drum adding, as I feel necessary, when the song is done I watch some anime or kung fu movies on mute. KL: If you were stranded on a desert island, what is one album that you could not live without?

LG: It’d have to be Specifics – Lonely City. It’s such a solid album and there are not many albums out there in which I like a good 90% per cent of the songs on it. Plus, it has one of my favorite hip-hop songs ever, “Take Me Back.” I can pretty much rap that song in full, considering the heavy rotation I’ve had of it. So long as I’ve got some coconuts to use as headphones in the dusk, and just stay up till sun dawn, then it’s one love y’all.

::Kj: Why have you chosen to release with ELLT?

::Josh: I really liked what the mission statement of the label is, and it is something that I identify with. I like the communal attitude, care and attention the label puts into each of its releases.

::Kj: Give us the back story of the creation process behind this album. Such an interesting title. Can you tell us about your concept?

::Josh: This album is my baby. It is the first “concept” album I have created, and in my opinion, is my seminal piece.
I wanted to create something that forces the mind into a state of reflection and contemplation.

It is, essentially, a sonic depiction of my own, and ostensibly humanity’s struggle to transcend the existential weight that comes with consciousness. It is designed to be listened to at loud volume levels and in its entirety. All of the samples used in this work are of me playing instruments, so it is entirely by my hand as well, which makes it all the more personal to me.

::Kj : Tell us about your humble beginnings and share with us any wisdom you may have for the younger producers in the scene today.

::Josh: I am a fifth generation musician and artist. I started playing the cello when I was nine, and then added double bass two years later. I taught myself all of the pop instruments and disciplines.. primarily guitar, drums, bass, and piano, but play over 20 instruments if you get in to all of the random ones…

I don’t know if I’m really qualified to deliver advice to anyone, but I suppose if I were to do so it would be this:

After decades of experience and dozens of projects I have learned that patience, knowledge to facilitate ability and creativity, and a good head for business are crucial if you want to succeed… but especially patience.

So few people have the courage and patience to continually sacrifice their dignity and social respect, with potentially no beneficial outcome, on the outside chance that their work will be acknowledged. It takes about ten years of hard work and exposure to be an overnight success.

::Kj: How does your environment/cultural experience influence your work?Does it? How has the Internet/technology changed the way you create/influence your craft? Has it?

::Josh: I try not to let my environment influence my work too much, but I find that I am more productive in some locations rather than others. Growing up in the desert in West Texas is rather discouraging for a musician, being so far removed from everything.

The internet was really my salvation as a musician. I had abandoned the idea of continuing to write at all publicly until about three years ago, when I found soundcloud on stumbleupon. I had been waiting for a website like that for an incredibly long time, and knew instantly that I had an opportunity to display my work to the world without being under another persons yoke. Initially I was doing it just to serve as an online sketchpad of sorts, but the overwhelmingly positive feedback I received encouraged me to take the idea seriously, and it has continued to gain momentum.

It has brought more opportunities and gratification than I could have possibly imagined.

::Kj: What inspires you to continually make music? Tell us about any music goals or directions you would like to take.

::Josh: Writing music, for me, isn’t a choice, really. Since early childhood I have heard music in my mind. I really don’t even have to “write” it… it just comes out and all I have to do is try my best to wrangle it into physical form for others to be able to digest it. Sometimes I wish I could turn it off, actually. I start to go crazy after a day or two if I don’t have anything to compose with…

As far as my goals are concerned, I doubt I’d be satisfied with anything less than total world domination.

All joking aside, I’d love to get to finally do a first tier release and tour.

::Kj: Any favorite producers/musicians/artists and why?

::Josh: Many people have asked me what my favorite color is, to which I can only respond that it is combinations of colors, rather than one singularly, that I find moving. Music, for me, is digested in a very similar fashion.

There are combinations of chords, textures, and rhythms that I find aesthetically pleasing, so naturally I gravitate to people who cater to those elements in their composition. I have very broad taste as a result of this. Of course I am madly in love with Flying Lotus, Tokimonsta, Mr.Dibia$e and the other experimental musicians on brainfeeder, as obviously evidenced in my work, but I actually spend more time listening to classical music from the impressionist period and Jazz than I do beats.

I grew up as a classical musician, and it is embedded in my understanding and interpretation of musical ideas, but have played in every type of project from Death Metal to Country. Composers like Debussy, Satie, Ravel, and Bach really show up in my tunes if you know what to listen for…

In fact that is really what I do, take my interpretations of classical concepts, distill them electronically, and reinterpret them for a more contemporary audience.

I love any artist that challenges convention, destroys genre, and evades description.

Enjoy. ::

Kj: Tell us about your decision to release with ELLT and your experience with us so far. Why ELLT?

AV: I decided to release with ELLT because I am inspired by the mindset that this label is going for. ELLT is trying to create a family atmosphere for all artists and I am drawn to that type of tight knit community.

Kj: Tell us about your career, how long you’ve been a producer, why you produce and any goals you have for yourself?

AV: I have been producing for about 3 years now. First started making electronic beats on garage band senior year of high school. I just found a breakthrough in my sound recently and I am grateful for the following that has supported me.

I produce because it helps me get out my introversion and gives me a positive feeling that I can’t really find anywhere else.

My goals for the future are to keep performing live shows and to create more beats in order to push my music to a larger audience.

Kj: Tell us about your recent shows and your beat boxing career. What other skills are you hiding ?
AV: Well before I got into electronic music or anything like that, it all started with beatboxing. I witnessed an a cappella group perform at my middle school one day and there was a beatboxer in the group that made all these percussion sounds with his mouth. From that moment on, I watched a bunch of beatbox videos on Youtube so that I could develop my vocal percussion.I guess you could say that beat boxing planted the seed for my love of electronic music, creative expression, etc.

As for shows, i just recently i opened up for RJD2 about a week ago. There were close to 1000 people at the venue and it was very humbling that they were vibing to my music. I try to incorporate beat boxing into my electronic performances in order to mix things up.

Another skill that I usually hide is that I’m pretty good at frisbee… yea that’s about it.

KJ: What does your work environment look like and what kind of equipment you use? Messy studio/ clean studio. Explain your creative process. Do you need coffee , silence etc.

AV: I would call myself a bedroom producer. the only equipment that I have to produce is a laptop and a midi controller (MPD 24), nothing fancy. Sometimes I have a huge craving to make a beat and sometimes I don’t feel like making anything at all. It all depends on how I’m feeling I guess. My room is messy as shit, I should probably try to tidy up the place. It’s probably not gonna happen though.

KJ: What motivates you to create music? Is it an intellectual or emotional process for you?

AV: Listening to all sorts of music motivates me to create music. While listening to non music, such as nature sounds and other ambient soundscapes, motivates me as well.

Kj: What inspired/influenced this album? What are your greatest influences whether it is other musicians or other outside influences.

AV: I called this album Reworks because I was inspired to put my own spin on certain samples that i was drawn to. I have been listening to a lot of mellow, alternative music recently and wanted to ‘rework’/manipulate those sounds into a experimental hip hop style that appealed to me.

I’m inspired by so many artists, but some of my greatest influences are J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Madlib, who are usually the main people who come to mind when someone thinks about beat music. Mndsgn and Knxwledge are my favorite producers too and it’s even better that they are originally from NJ because thats where I was born and raised. My parents are also a great influence on me because I’m fortunate that they raised me right and that they support me in everything I do.

Kj: Tell us about your decision to use and old family photo as your album cover for this release. Any special meaning?

AV: This famly photo is exteremly personal and it is very significant to the meaning of “Flamingosis”. The name “Flamingosis” originates from a frisbee freestyle move that my father created. Back in the 70’s, my dad and uncle were world champions in the sport of freestyle frisbee. It sounds really random, but it’s true.
I try to carry on my family’s rich tradition in creativity and self-expression, not through sports or frisbee, but rather through electronic music.

Kj: How are you feeling about your first tape?

AV: I’m extremely excited for this tape and am very thankful for the support that you have given me! Hopefully this release will be well received. I put a lot of love into it.

:: We’re happy and feel blessed to have you representing us, Aaron, thank you for sitting down with us to answer a few questions. We wish you the best with the cassette. Much love in return. ::
